In a Pot Inside –Keep next to the window for lots of sun. Water your Moringa tree once a week away from the bark. Let the soil dry completely between watering. Once the tree is about 2 feet tall, water every other week. As the tree matures, it will need less watering. Once it is two years old, water minimally once a month. If the leaves turn yellow, it may be due to overwatering. When harvesting, take the leaves from the bottom. You can trim your tree down to 2 – 4 ft and allow the new growth to grow from the stump.
In a Pot Outside – 4-6 hours of sun is plenty. Water your small tree twice a week. Let the soil dry completely. Once the tree is about 3 ft tall, once a week is fine unless it is very hot outside. Keeping your tree in a pot outside will expose the roots to more heat then being planted in the ground so it will need more water than ground planted trees.
In the Ground – DEER RESISTANT!That’s right! Deer don’t like the smell of the leaves although it has a mild to no sent to humans. Moringa trees LOVE being planted in the ground. You will see a big difference in the growth and vitality of your tree being in the ground. It will only take about a week before the roots stabilize and growth will be abundant. Sometimes your tree will shed it’s leaves after it’s been transferred from pot to ground but that’s normal. It will grow back. You can plant the tree in full sun. Mulch vigorously to protect the radish shaped roots. Even if the stalk dies and the tree looks dead, the root system may still be alive. Give it time and a new branch may grow directly from the root system. Trimming the leaves off regularly will increase your harvest. Stumping it 2-4 feet will cause the base to grow thicker and stronger. If just allowed to grow untrimmed, it can get up to 20-30 ft tall. I would not recommend this unless you are in zones 9-10 as you would not be able to protect it from cold temperatures.
Cooler Climates – Yes, you can still grow Moringa if you have warm spring and summers. Mulch vigorously and trim your tree down to either 2 ft or to the ground. Cover with a frost blanket when temperatures dip below 30. The tree will naturally hibernate during cold winters. The stump will sprout leaves when the weather warms up.
